Reuter Kitchen Remodel

When the Reuter family decided to remodel their home in Williamsburg, they called Hatchett Design Remodel. Like many homeowners looking to remodel, they were generally pleased with the layout of their kitchen.  That said, they also felt it was too dark, showing signs of wear and just needed a refresh.

Reuter Kitchen BEFORE
Light Painted Cabinets

The Reuters’ kitchen is in the center of their first floor, so the only natural light in that space is from adjacent rooms.  The open concept of their existing floor plan allows light to enter the kitchen, but the dark stained cabinets soaked up too much of the light.  To brighten the space, Jessica recommended painted cabinets to help bounce the light around their kitchen. The Reuters opted for two-tone cabinets with Gray Mist for the lower cabinets and Dove White for the uppers. A neutral color palette such as this gives homeowners flexibility in choosing and changing their decor. It also provides longevity to the life of your renovation.

For contrast against the light cabinetry, the Reuters chose slate pulls from Top Knobs‘ Atlas collection. Then we added a subtle pop of color with light blue glass tiles from Morris Tile in the backsplash by the refrigerator.

While most of their new kitchen is indeed “new”, they asked us to salvage one thing – their kitchen island countertop. That request was tricky, but Hatchett’s team is always up for a challenge! In order to keep the countertop of their uniquely shaped island, we had to replicate the size and shape with new cabinetry. This took a little extra creativity, but as you can see, it turned out beautifully.

The hexagon shape of the Soho Eco Ocean 2″ tiles complement their larger counterpart on the opposite wall.  The backsplash behind the range was created from gray Classico 7″x8″ hex tiles from Mosaic Tile.

Specialty Storage

The cabinetry is Ultracraft Eurotek frameless cabinets with Cape May doors on the island and Jamestown doors on the surrounding cabinets. The surround cabinets are topped with Silestone Cemento Spa countertops to complement the granite top of the island.

To help this busy family of five stay organized, we added matching cabinetry and tops in the pantry and a specialty cabinet next to the refrigerator.  This organizational cabinet now serves as their “home base” for schedules, forms and mail.

The Reuters are very pleased with their kitchen remodel, and it was our pleasure to bring it to life.  Well done, team – Meghan (Design Consultant), Jessica (Designer) and Buck (Project Manager).

Browning Kitchen Remodel

Mr. and Mrs. Browning contacted Hatchett Design Remodel, because they wanted to update the kitchen in their Virginia Beach home. Overall, they were happy with the bold green color of the walls and the footprint of their kitchen, but they wanted the space to be more functional and up to date.

White and Bright

The original space was dark and felt heavy. The new white shaker cabinets from Mid Continent really pop against the bold green color of their kitchen walls. The new design is bright and cheerful.

To complete the look, the countertops are Pacific Ocean Silestone Quartz, and the brushed nickel pulls are from Top Knobs‘ Lydia collection.

Storage Space

The layout of the Brownings’ kitchen remains the same, but we increased the size of the island and replaced their furniture pantry with a larger pantry cabinet.

These design choices added to their overall storage space and created a more cohesive look. For even more storage space, their new cabinets extend higher up the wall giving them another shelf of storage inside each cabinet.

In their base cabinets, we installed pull-out drawers, spice pull-outs, pot lid holders, tray dividers, trash can pull-outs, and 2 Lazy Susans that help keep their kitchen supplies well-organized and easy-to-access.

The Brownings have so much storage now that they haven’t even filled all their cabinets yet. They are very happy with how their remodeled kitchen turned out, and they love showing it off to friends and family.

Congratulations to our design team for another job well done: Meghan, Design Consultant; Tara, Designer; and Adam, Project Manager!

Callahan Kitchen Remodel

The Callahans were expecting their second child when they decided to undertake a remodel. This growing family needed a more functional kitchen to help their daily routine run smoothly, and our design team at Hatchett Design Remodel was happy to help!

Initial Consultation

In the Callahans’ initial consultation with Meghan and Tara, we learned what they liked and didn’t like about their kitchen. Their biggest complaints included the kitchen peninsula and the lack of useful storage space.

The original kitchen peninsula cut the kitchen off from the living room, and this proved to be a nuisance. The Callahans wanted the two rooms to flow together as one. Replacing the peninsula with an island was the obvious solution, but finding the right island design was challenging. The angles of the kitchen floor plan meant that a standard rectangular island would not sit well in their space, so Tara custom designed an island that fits perfectly in the Callahan’s new kitchen.

The Design Phase

In order to create more functional storage space, Hatchett extended the wall by the stairs and removed a closet. Doing so created ample room for additional wall cabinets and a large pantry cabinet as well. Unlike the original cabinets, their new Echelon cabinets provide extra storage space by extending all the way to the ceiling.

The Callahans chose their Echelon cabinets when they visited Hatchett’s Virginia Beach showroom on Selection Day. Visiting our showroom allows clients to see and touch the materials that will be used in their remodel. This step in our design process not only ensures that you will be pleased with the finished project, but it also makes it easier to make decisions about your materials. The Callahans, for example, knew they wanted two-toned cabinets for their kitchen – white uppers and colored lower cabinets; but they weren’t sure which color they wanted on the bottom. As soon as they saw the blue green hue of Echelon’s Baltic painted cabinets in person, they were sold!

The hints of gray in their Atlantic Quartz countertops help tie the light and dark cabinets together. They then chose wood plank tile for the backsplash to bring warmth to the space and mimic their floors. For the cabinet hardware and fixtures, they opted to embrace the trend of mixing metals. They picked matte black pulls for their cabinets, and their son chose this beautiful chrome faucet for the sink in their island.

The Construction Phase

The Callahans’ first born child also proved to be quite handy come Demo Day. He’s one of the most promising apprentices that Dennis has ever had.

Mrs. Callahan described their experience with Hatchett as “enjoyable and smooth.” She added, “They listened to our wish list and designed our kitchen to match. We are so happy with the finished product and love using our new kitchen”.

We had a great partnership with the Callahans, and our design team thoroughly enjoyed working with them throughout the remodeling process. The completed project turned out beautifully… and just in time. A few short weeks later, the Callahans welcomed their second child. Congratulations to Mom, Dad and Big Bro!

Horton Kitchen Remodel

Mr. and Mrs. Horton recently purchased a condo in Chesapeake that was almost everything they wanted. Before they moved in, the Hortons hired Hatchett Design Remodel to put the dreamy in their new dream home.

Rethinking the Floor Plan

One of the bigger construction goals of this remodel required widening the entryway between the family room and the kitchen to create an open concept. This also created floor space for a larger, more useful kitchen island.

To make the space more functional, they also opted to replace the French doors from the kitchen to the deck with pantry cabinets and a wet bar. There’s another door to access the deck from the family room, so this wasn’t a tough call for them.

Material Selections

The Hortons visited our showroom in Virginia Beach to make their material selections. They chose Midcontinent shaker style kitchen cabinets painted Divinity White as well as several bonus accessories. These beautiful cabinets are outfitted with wonderful features such as hidden trash can pull outs, spice pull outs, tray dividers, deep pot & pan drawers and roll trays.

They originally selected a mosaic tile backsplash, but we wound up going with the classic simplicity of subway tile for a cleaner look.

The counters are topped with Fantasy Brown Granite. To complement the color scheme of the granite, we selected hardware and plumbing fixtures in brushed nickel. The finished project is stunning, and the Hortons couldn’t be happier with their new kitchen.

That makes us happy too! Kudos to our design team led by Jake (Design Consultant), Tara (Designer) and Dennis (Project Manager).
