Quick & Easy 4th of July Party Tips

If you too have been blindsided by July’s arrival, then you’re probably scrambling for party ideas for your 4th of July festivities. Hatchett Design Remodel is here to help! Our design teams in Newport News and Virginia Beach have come up with a few easy ideas that will put the patriotic in your party plans!

Front Entrance Decor

As in home design, decor sets the tone. Embrace the flag theme and carry it through every element of our party. For starters, guests should be greeted by old glory upon their arrival. If you don’t already have an American flag hanging from your home, now’s a good time to wave those stars and stripes.

Luminaries along the driveway, sidewalk and front stoop are a festive way to welcome your guests. All you need are mason jars, small American flags and battery operated votives (all of which can be found at your local dollar store).

If you have a little time to commit to your porch decor, make a patriotic wreath for your front door. This clothespin wreath is simple and inexpensive to make. The wire wreath frame, twine, clothespins, spray paint and foam stars are all available at any craft store. We recommend spray painting the clothespins before assembly.

Backyard Decor

Most 4th of July parties spill over into the backyard, so don’t forget to decorate out there too. This balloon flag display is fun and super easy to replicate. If you’re using helium, attach each column of balloons to a single string tacked to the floor or tied to a weight. Then line them up next to each other to create the stars and stripes. If you don’t have helium, the balloons can be attached to a wall with tape or poster putty. Be sure to clean the surface of the wall so that the balloons stick.

Patriotic Playlist

When it comes to parties, silence is NOT golden. You’ve gotta have good music to create the right mood. Let freedom ring by including these star spangled singles in your 4th of July playlist.

Kid Activities

If you have little ones attending your soiree, you’re gonna need some games or activities to keep them entertained. This clever Snap, Crackle and Pop display has all the stuff kids love, and it doubles as decor. “Snap” fireworks are harmless and loud – kids love loud stuff. Sparklers are a 4th of July staple, so they are perfect for the “crackle”. Last but not least, little bottles of bubbles are the “pop”. Have at it, kiddos!

Cocktails

Now that the kids are covered, you need a little something special for the adults. This red, white and blue vodka lemonade slushy is a refreshing party pleaser that will help the grown ups beat the heat. It may look harder than it is, but be sure to follow the recipe carefully. It’s important to pour the heaviest red layer on the bottom, followed by the blue, top it off with the white, then enjoy responsibly!

Cheers! All of us at Hatchett Design Remodel wish you and yours a happy and safe 4th of July.

And when you’re ready to remodel your kitchen, bathroom or addition, we hope you reach out to us at our showrooms in Newport News or Virginia Beach… remember, it costs nothing to ask!

Thank You!

Hatchett Design Remodel would like to thank everyone who helped make our 2018 Toys for Tots drive a success!

We collected 254 toys in our Virginia Beach and Newport News showrooms in addition to the 51 cash donations made through our website.

Thank You for Toys for Tots Donations at Hatchett Newport News Showroom

While gift giving is a holiday tradition for most, there are many families who have fallen on hard times and can not afford the luxury of buying presents. Thanks to all who donated, hundreds of children in Hampton Roads received Christmas presents this year.

Toys for Tots Hatchett Donations Virginia Beach Showroom

A big THANK YOU to our clients, employees, fellow small businesses and the local organizations that chipped in to help Toys for Tots.

We also want to thank Toys for Tots Area Coordinator, Elizabeth Moose, and all the volunteers who help put the gifts into the hands of deserving children in our community. We appreciate each and every one of you.

Coming together to support Toys for Tots is a wonderful way to wrap up 2018. Hatchett Design Remodel is grateful for the year we’ve had, and we look forward to what’s to come in 2019.  Happy New Year, everyone!

Holiday Lights in Hampton Roads

When it comes to holiday lights, we have a lot of options in Hampton Roads: the Oceanfront, Norfolk Botanical Gardens and Newport News Park. While those displays are magnificent, Hatchett Design Remodel is particularly fond of homeowners who transform their houses in to magical wonderlands for children of all ages. Here are a few of our favorites.

Newport News

The Stern Family Holiday Light Show is a must-see. Swing by 108 Sheffield Way in the Denbigh area of Newport News for a spectacular display set to music. Elvis fans “won’t be blue” about this year’s soundtrack (wink, wink).

Chesapeake

The Williford family puts on quite the show at 4028 Woodland Drive in Chesapeake. Not only do you have to see this one, you have to get out of your car and walk through it! Their collection of inflatable Christmas displays line BlowUp Alley. The Woodland Christmas Wonderland is lit up nightly, and they are collecting donations for the Portsmouth Humane Society.

The Sheely Family Lights at 703 Ava Court in Chesapeake is raising money and awareness for the Eliza Hope Foundation. In addition to music and a synchronized light show, the Sheelys have also incorporated video elements into their display. Video clips of little Eliza are projected on the front of their home.

Virginia Beach

A trip down Mansion Cross Lane is sure to brighten your holidays. Over 50,000 lights across 6 houses are all synced to music. And as if that’s not enough to delight, there’s also a snow machine! This neighborhood display benefits St. Judes, so please donate if you drop by.

Holiday Lights Self Guided Tour through Hampton Roads

All of these and many other displays can be found on this map. Sam Sansalone, a local Christmas light aficionado, spent 100 driving hours mapping out the best light displays in Hampton Roads. With the help of his fellow fans, Sam has created a color coded map to help you find the best displays in your neighborhood. Green pins are must-sees. Blues are very impressive. Reds are unconfirmed for this year. Purples are taking 2018 off. Can you really blame them? These displays are a lot of work! Click the pins for descriptions of each display.

So pop some popcorn and fill the ol’ thermos with hot cocoa. It’s time to pile the whole family into the car and load up your Google maps for a self-guided tour through Hampton Roads’ best holiday light displays. Drive safe and be patient – these sites are popular. Hatchett Design Remodel hopes your holidays are MERRY & BRIGHT!

Toys for Tots 2018 Kick-Off

The halls of Hatchett Design Remodel are decked for the holidays as we kick-off this year’s Toys for Tots campaign. Now thru December 14th, we are collecting new, unwrapped toys at our showrooms in Newport News and Virginia Beach.
The Marine Toys for Tots mission is to send a message of hope to America’s less fortunate children through the gift of a new toy. Their mission resonates with our team here at Hatchett, and we hope that you’ll help us spread the joy of Christmas throughout Hampton Roads. Your gifts will be given to children in our community.
If you’d like to help but hate to shop, monetary donations can be made by clicking the “Donate” button on our website.
For those who enjoy shopping as much as giving, here’s what’s popular with the tots this year.
Encourage family bonding with a good, old-fashioned board game… or choose a game like Googly Eyes that puts a silly twist on a ol’ favorite. This hilarious game is basically Win Lose or Draw with vision-altering eyewear.
Inspire the creativity of a budding story teller with a LEGO Make Your Own Movie kit. This toy includes a free app (compatible with both tablets and phones) that helps kids direct their own stop-motion animated movies.
Play it safe with a present that’s sure to please, like anything Star Wars. With light and sound, this Bladebuilders toy is a good choice – because who doesn’t want their own lightsaber?!
Toys that get kids playing outside can usually be enjoyed by more than one kid at a time. You can’t go wrong with Giant Jenga, Ladder Ball, Bocce Ball, Bean Bag Toss, or a frisbee or frisbee game like Flimsee.

However you choose to donate, your contribution is tax-deductible. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity.

Thank you for helping make Christmas brighter for children in our community. You may drop off a new, unwrapped toy at our showrooms in Newport News and Virginia Beach. We are open 10am to 5pm Monday through Friday. And like Don Hatchett says, your donation is more than just a toy, it’s a gift of joy.
