The Mompers bought a beautiful old home overlooking the water in Carrollton, Virginia. The original portion of the house was built more than 200 years ago, and the kitchen addition was built in the last century. Their home is loaded with character and charm, but Mrs. Momper felt the kitchen was too dark and that the layout was not ideal. She wanted a space that was bright and cheerful. She also wanted to make the most of the natural light and their beautiful river views. So what did they do? They called Hatchett!
The Design Phase
Adding color with a touch of “whimsy” (her word) was at the tippy top of Mrs. Momper’s list. Her other priorities for the renovation included relocating the sink to the window where she can enjoy their gorgeous view and installing an apron double sink. Another important consideration was the functionality of their new kitchen. The ability to age in place as they move into their retirement years was taken into thoughtful consideration with each design element. Allison’s creative juices were pumping as she worked on the design for the Mompers’ kitchen remodel.
Construction Phase
For this remodel, Allison recommended Starmark cabinets with the Taft door style. We used the Wild Honey tinted varnish on the perimeter cabinets, and we chose their Breeze varnish for the island and peninsula.
The cabinets are topped with Silestone Lusso Quartz. For contrast, we selected oil-rubbed bronze pulls for their cabinet hardware.
The backsplash tile is a stunning accent that ties all of the colors in this design together while adding that touch of whimsy that Mrs. Momper wanted. The tile is Linea by Hirsch Glass Tile.
In coordination with the tile, the Mompers selected ELK mini pendant lights. Three of these hang over their kitchen island.
Per Mrs. Momper’s request, Allison reworked the footprint of the kitchen in order to move the kitchen sink under the window that overlooks the James River. Her gorgeous new Kohler apron double sink is complemented by a Delta pull-out spray faucet finished in Champagne Bronze.
The Big Reveal
The Momper kitchen is a 100% customized space that reflects their style and personality, but its design is not the only thing that was unique about this project. On the morning of demo day, September 22, 2020, Mr. Momper woke to find his wife unresponsive. Fortunately, she is home now and doing well, but she was hospitalized and in recovery throughout their entire kitchen remodel. While she was able to communicate remotely through most of the remodeling process, she had not seen a single part of her new kitchen until she returned home three months later on December 22nd. This is the first time in Hatchett’s 60 year history that we experienced a full reveal with a homeowner, and we must say that it’s just as much fun as it looks on all those HGTV shows.
Mrs. Momper was overwhelmed with emotion as she returned home and entered the kitchen of her dreams. “It’s perfect… it’s just perfect” were the words she uttered through tears. We are incredibly humbled to have shared that experience with the Momper family. Thank you for entrusting us with your home, and we are beyond thrilled that you are so happy with your new kitchen.
