For over 50 years, Hatchett Design Remodel has renovated thousands of homes throughout Hampton Roads. Our kitchens, bathrooms, and additions are custom designed for the wants and needs of each individual client. Hatchett’s design team handles every project with the thoughtful attention to detail it deserves, and there are some renovation projects that hold an extra special place in our hearts.
When we first met with the Carrs, they described their dream kitchen as “country chic”. Having lived on farms since birth, they love the down-home feel of a country kitchen, yet they wanted their remodeled kitchen to look updated and contemporary. Both Mr. and Mrs. Carr love to cook, so function was also crucial to the design.
In our initial consultation when we gather information from our clients, Mrs. Carr shared with us that she had some restored barn siding from the farm where she and her mother grew up. At that moment, we knew this reclaimed wood had to be the centerpiece of her kitchen. During our design process, we chose to literally make it the centerpiece by wrapping the island in that old barn wood.
In this design, the Carr’s kitchen island is the focal point of their kitchen – both from the main entry through the back door as well from the eating area and the den. This island serves as the main workspace, an additional eating area, and houses both the microwave and dishwasher. To allow for an island large enough to meet all of their needs, we opened the kitchen wall to the den.
To complement the richness of the reclaimed barn wood island, we chose custom gray/blue and white paint colors for the surrounding cabinets and the classic look of white subway tiles and carrara tops in quartz. These materials all meet Carr’s request for an updated, modern design while their simplicity contributes to their farmhouse feel.
Our design team is very proud of this kitchen, because it is both beautiful and functional – but we are most proud of how happy we made the Carrs! By incorporating the reclaimed barn wood from Mrs. Carr’s childhood into her newly renovated kitchen, we helped make those happy memories a part of many great memories yet to be made.
