The Callahans were expecting their second child when they decided to undertake a remodel. This growing family needed a more functional kitchen to help their daily routine run smoothly, and our design team at Hatchett Design Remodel was happy to help! Initial ConsultationIn the Callahans’ initial consultation with Meghan and Tara, we learned what they liked and didn’t like about their kitchen. Their biggest complaints included the kitchen peninsula and the lack of useful storage space.
The original kitchen peninsula cut the kitchen off from the living room, and this proved to be a nuisance. The Callahans wanted the two rooms to flow together as one. Replacing the peninsula with an island was the obvious solution, but finding the right island design was challenging. The angles of the kitchen floor plan meant that a standard rectangular island would not sit well in their space, so Tara custom designed an island that fits perfectly in the Callahan’s new kitchen.
The Design PhaseIn order to create more functional storage space, Hatchett extended the wall by the stairs and removed a closet. Doing so created ample room for additional wall cabinets and a large pantry cabinet as well. Unlike the original cabinets, their new Echelon cabinets provide extra storage space by extending all the way to the ceiling. The Callahans chose their Echelon cabinets when they visited Hatchett’s Virginia Beach showroom on Selection Day. Visiting our showroom allows clients to see and touch the materials that will be used in their remodel. This step in our design process not only ensures that you will be pleased with the finished project, but it also makes it easier to make decisions about your materials. The Callahans, for example, knew they wanted two-toned cabinets for their kitchen – white uppers and colored lower cabinets; but they weren’t sure which color they wanted on the bottom. As soon as they saw the blue green hue of Echelon’s Baltic painted cabinets in person, they were sold!
The hints of gray in their Atlantic Quartz countertops help tie the light and dark cabinets together. They then chose wood plank tile for the backsplash to bring warmth to the space and mimic their floors. For the cabinet hardware and fixtures, they opted to embrace the trend of mixing metals. They picked matte black pulls for their cabinets, and their son chose this beautiful chrome faucet for the sink in their island.
The Construction PhaseThe Callahans’ first born child also proved to be quite handy come Demo Day. He’s one of the most promising apprentices that Dennis has ever had.
Mrs. Callahan described their experience with Hatchett as “enjoyable and smooth.” She added, “They listened to our wish list and designed our kitchen to match. We are so happy with the finished product and love using our new kitchen”. We had a great partnership with the Callahans, and our design team thoroughly enjoyed working with them throughout the remodeling process. The completed project turned out beautifully… and just in time. A few short weeks later, the Callahans welcomed their second child. Congratulations to Mom, Dad and Big Bro!
